As housing prices in urban areas sky rocket, all disciplines must look to inventive solutions. Goedkoop is a book that explores historical and contemporary precedents in the Netherlands. The Dutch have a long and storied history with respect to both design and housing. With the relatively recent privatization of their social housing corporations, they also have a feasible and inspiring collection of lessons for the American housing market.
Four 'levers' that were first outlined in the 2014 McKinsey & Co study on the issue were used as a framework for the investigation: Unlocking land supply, Construction and development, Operations and maintenance, and financing. Through this lense, Goedkoop analyzes a number of Dutch projects that have achieved success in one or more of these categories.
